On July 30, 2026, no fewer than nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people flooded the border. Spanish troops were called in after authorities could not manage the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities stated that about 40,000 migrants came in on foot, approximately half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union announced Frontex would assist and urged Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces maintained control over the flow under control and labored to halt additional loss of life.
